For the entire family, El Viaje
de Tina (Tina’s Journey) is a unique international
co-production between a Chicano (Mexican-American) theater
company and a Mexican company, utilizing traditional folk
masks from México and masks designed by General Director of
Laboratio de la Máscara (Mask Laboratory), Alicia Martínez
Álvarez.
El Viaje de Tina (Tina’s
Journey) is about the struggles of a
teenage girl, her family, and her deceased ancestors who hope
to cross the U.S.-Mexican border before the Day of the Dead
holidays. Tina takes along her land, her past and her dead
ancestors, leaving a trail of flowers so that the deceased can
follow her. When Tina crosses the border, her new reality
(climate, language, customs and celebrations) makes her ill
almost to the point of death. She believes that her past has
abandoned her, but her eldest ancestor helps her understand
that the coexistence of the two worlds will form part of her
new identity.
El Viaje de Tina (Tina’s Journey) is part of a
bi-national project, US-Mexican History through Folk Masks
from Michoacan, supported by the Ford Foundation through a
Transnational Cultural Remittances grant from NALAC, the
National Association of Latino Arts and Culture.
